Become A Trainer
When I decided to become a trainer, I already had a good background in psychology, experience with rescues, and was fortunate enough to have been in contact with Norma Jeanne, who is not only the founder of Puppy Power and the International Positive Dog Training Association (IPDTA) but also the creator of Canine Correspondence Studies (CCS). I found the CCS course to be very thorough, well laid out and most important - 100% based on positive techniques and Classical Conditioning. Norma Jeanne is very encouraging and knowledgeable and was quick to answer any questions I had. She is now outside of the KW area but is still offering the CCS course online to students across the globe.
Recently I have become a mentor for the Animal Behaviour College (ABC), which offers a continuing education program for students across North America.
Because I believe it is important to continue to offer the KW region the same hands-on training that I received, I am now offering on-site mentoring to CCS students for $300. This includes opportunities to audit and get hands-on practice in Puppy Power's Life Lessons Group Classes as well as some opportunities to come audit private consultations. Students of the Animal Behaviour College have their mentoring fee included in their tuition with ABC.
I do realize there are other courses and backgrounds that could lead you to want to become a trainer or maybe just develop your skills for doing rescue work and/or fostering dogs. Getting a solid background in animal learning theory & conditioning and getting hands-on practice with experienced trainers is your best place to start. Attending seminars to stay current with new positive techniques, tools, and findings are important as well. If you're coming from a background other than the CCS or ABC courses, but still looking to develop your training skills, please contact me directly. Please note: I do not allow force, intimidation or dominance/alpha-based techniques in my classes, and I reserve the right to turn away those whom I think may compromise the integrity of my classes. The reason I decided to start to offer mentoring is to increase the number of positive trainers & dog handlers in the industry, which is strictly for the benefit of the dogs.
